Zeta Phi Beta Sorority was founded on January 16, 1920 on the campus of Howard University in Washington, D.C. by five coeds. The Founders, also known as our Five Pearls, were strong, principled women who possessed a great deal of modesty, strength of character and pride in academic achievement, and dared to depart from the traditional coalitions for Black Women and sought to establish a new organization predicated on the precepts of embracing Scholarship, providing Service, setting a standard to true Sisterly Love, and defining the noble concept of Finer Womanhood. Arizona Cleaver-Stemmons, Myrtly Tyler-Faithful, Viola Tyler-Goings, Fannie Pettie-Watts, and Pearl Anna Neal trailblazed the path and were dedicated to the emulation of the objectives and ideals of the Sorority. It was the idea of the Founders that the Sorority would reach college women in all parts of the country who were sorority minded and desired to follow the founding principles of the organization.

Chapter History

On May 10, 2002, another chapter in Zeta history was recorded with the chartering

St. Croix Campus. There were seven outstanding ladies who made the light of Zeta

shine brighter: Julia Bennerson, Tamarah Gilbert, Zahra O’Reilly, Maren Branch,

Desiree Phillip,Tania Ruemelle, and Pauline Haywood. Soror Tamarah Gilbert was elected the first Basileus of this Chapter. Since the chartering of Chi Rho, the ladies have been extremely active on campus and in the community. Activities include fundraisers for the Dororthy Hicks Scholarship Program, hosting of Sorority’s informational, promotion of Finer Women Don’t Haze through campus forums, participation in campus activities in conjunction with other Greek Letter organizations, and most recently, participating in the UVI College Fair Open House for high school students. With the support of the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Graduate Chapter, Nu Chi Zeta, Chi Rho will continue to exemplify the highest ideals of Service, Scholarship, Sisterhood and Finer Womanhood.
